Sunshine Coast based artist Peter Hudson returns to Mitchell Fine Art in Brisbane for his fourth solo exhibition 'Not Dark Yet' showcasing the power of the natural landscape from 19th May.
Peter Hudson is a painter and musician who draws on contemporary Australian history for inspiration in his art making. Regular painting trips and sketching form an integral part of his creative process in capturing the spirit or essence of the landscape.
‘The majority of my work is always landscape related. The aesthetic, the mystery, the seen and unseen, and the 'primal intelligence of nature’ keeps me working on what feels like the same picture over and over again’, says Hudson.
In his new exhibition Hudson explores the quiet dialogue between earth and sky. Recurring motifs such as birds, saltwater ecosystems and wildlife, moonlight and stars and the Glasshouse Mountains appear as symbols of larger natural systems, echoing cycles of gravity, migration and cosmic order.
‘This exhibition reflects the artist’s enduring fascination with nature, the night sky, and the unseen forces that connect all living things’ says Director Mike Mitchell.
‘These works suggest that the same forces guiding tides and constellations are also present in the everyday environments we inhabit’.
Peter Hudson has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize and is a three-time finalist in the Brisbane Portrait Prize. His works are represented in National and regional collections including Parliament House in Brisbane, and the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.
The exhibition is showing from 19 May – 13 June 2026.
An Artist Talk and Exhibition Opening will be held on Saturday 23rd May, 2.30 - 4:30pm with Peter Hudson in attendance.
A musical performance in response to the exhibition will be held in the gallery on Wednesday 3 June, 6 - 7pm featuring Peter Hudson on drums.
All events are free, RSVPs not required.
