Mitchell Fine Art is thrilled to announce the representation of Indonesian artist Arwin Hidayat.
Known for his intricate, colourful compositions and evocative depictions of cultural symbolism, Arwin Hidayat brings a unique and powerful voice to the gallery’s roster of artists. His distinctive style and compelling narratives have earned him widespread recognition in both Indonesia and the international art scene.
Born in Yogyakarta in 1983, Arwin Hidayat has been drawing since childhood, inspired by the rich storytelling tradition of his homeland. His late father’s captivating stories played a significant role in shaping his artistic imagination, influencing the way he weaves mythology, spirituality, and historical themes into his artwork.
Arwin studied in Yogyakarta, where he refined his technical skills and developed his signature style. His work is deeply rooted in Indonesian cultural heritage, particularly the ancient tradition of batik, which he reinterprets in a contemporary visual language.
His compositions often feature surreal imagery, including birds, serpents, distorted human forms, and everyday objects juxtaposed with explicit symbols—creating thought-provoking and layered narratives.
Over the past decade, Arwin Hidayat has gained increasing attention within Yogyakarta’s vibrant art community and internationally. His bold and unconventional approach to painting, sculpture, ceramics and batik has redefined perceptions, blending traditional motifs and techniques with modern storytelling.
Arwin’s distinctive artistic voice has attracted attention from major institutions and collectors worldwide. His work is held in significant collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), reinforcing his growing impact on the contemporary art scene in Australia.
Mitchell Fine Art looks forward to introducing his work to new audiences. Arwin's unique ability to fuse traditional Indonesian craftsmanship with contemporary themes aligns with our commitment to showcasing innovative and culturally significant artists.
Arwin Hidayat's solo exhibition will be held from 29 July - 23 August 2025.
