Our Story

Formerly known as Muk Muk Fine Art, the business started in 1997 in Darwin in the Northern Territory. 

The Muk Muk or 'Night Owl' story features in the artworks of First Nations artists Rover Thomas (from the Kimberley region, WA) and Barney Ellaga (from the Top End region, NT).

A former Marist Ashgrove Old Boy, Gallery Director Mike Mitchell has over 35 years of experience working in Aboriginal communities across Queensland and the Northern Territory.

A passionate and avid art collector Mike began his art collecting journey at age 8 and his collecting continues to this day. Born in Darwin, as a young child Mike's family relocated to Papua New Guinea, where he spent this teenage years, also attending boarding school in Brisbane.

After completing his secondary education, Mike began a career in Aboriginal education. Living and working in communities provided a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture and a profound connection to their art and culture.

Mike has worked with some of Australia’s foremost Indigenous artists, both living and now deceased and has curated exhibitions within Australia and around the world, striving to nurture emerging talent and promote art throughout Australia and overseas.

Mitchell Fine Art is founded on strong working relationships with its clients and is passionate about the arts.

With over 25 years experience in representing artists, curating exhibitions in Australia and overseas and the gallery is proud to nurture and promote art talent.
