Our Story

Under its first iteration Mitchell Fine Art was established in 1997 in Darwin in the Northern Territory. 

In addition to over 30 years experience in the art industry, Gallery Director Mike Mitchell has over 40 years of experience working in Aboriginal communities across Queensland and the Northern Territory.

A passionate art collector, Mike began his art collecting journey at an early age and it is a passion that continues to this day. Although, born in Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory, as a child Mike's family relocated to Papua New Guinea, where he spent this teenage years attending boarding school in Brisbane.

After completing his secondary education, Mike began a career in Aboriginal education. Living and working in communities provided a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture and a profound connection to their art and culture.

Mike has worked with some of Australia’s foremost Indigenous artists, both living and now deceased and has curated exhibitions within Australia and around the world, striving to nurture emerging talent and promote art throughout Australia and overseas.

Mitchell Fine Art is founded on strong working relationships with its clients and is passionate about the arts.
