Mitchell Fine Art is delighted to announce the representation of Jorge Mariño Brito.
Jorge Mariño Brito born in 1979 in Cuba now lives and works in Brisbane. He graduated from the Queensland College of Art and Design in 2024.
His artistic practice encompasses painting, paper-making and printmaking. With a background in psychiatry, he draws from his work within Latin American communities, confronting the complexities of navigating different cultures and creating safe spaces.
Mariño Brito's artwork combines his sensitive depictions of human relationships with a love for painterly materials, bringing intimate moments captured in found photographs back to life.
The incomplete shapes and ambiguous field of his paintings seek to create a sense of intimacy between the subjects and with the viewer by allowing the eye to move freely around the simultaneously energetic and delicate fields.
His work tackles issues of gender, sexuality, and otherness that challenge traditional norms while exploring queer identity. He often responds to intense scrutiny, and the necessity of creating temporary enclaves of safety and comfort.
Jorge Mariño Brito has participated in exhibitions in Perth, Sydney, Bundaberg and Brisbane; and has work in permanent collections at the Griffith University Art Museum (GUAM) and the State Library of Queensland.
He was a finalist in the 2025 Churchie Emerging Art Prize in Brisbane.
