Two Ways of Knowing Country: Idris Murphy and Patrick Tjungurrayi
2–4 October 2026 | George R. Brown Convention Center | Booth E28
Mitchell Fine Art, Brisbane presents a rare dialogue between Sydney artist Idris Murphy and celebrated Pintupi artist Patrick Tjungurrayi at Untitled Art Houston, Texas USA.
Though grounded in profoundly different cultural lineages, both artists share a commitment to expressing the lived, remembered and felt experience of Country. Their works move beyond literal representations of landscape, instead evoking the deeper spiritual, sensory and emotional structures that shape our experience of place.
Presented together, the works reveal two distinct approaches to landscape while creating a powerful visual dialogue. Murphy’s luminous, open planes find a counterpoint in Tjungurrayi’s dense, rhythmic structures; atmosphere and light meet pattern and pulse.
Together, the artists offer a layered understanding of place — Country as story, Country as memory, and Country as lived experience — inviting audiences to consider how abstraction can create meaningful connections across cultures while honouring the integrity of each artist’s practice.
