2022 Hadley's Art Prize Finalists

Congratulations to Adrian Jangala Robertson and Max Bowden on their selection as a finalist in the 2022 Hadley’s Art Prize in Hobart.

The Hadley’s Art Prize celebrates painting and drawing of the Australian landscape and is Australia’s richest landscape art award, offering $100,000 to the winning entry.

Adrian Jangala Robertson joined The Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists in 2002. He is a landscape painter and uses a predominantly restricted palette. His paintings consistently refer to the desert mountains, ridges and trees which are part of Yalpirakinu. His brushwork is loaded with energy, drama and memories.

Adrian Jangala is a deliberate and thoughtful painter; reworking, pushing and pulling the image to completion.

Max Bowden’s plein-air paintings capture the dramatic atmosphere and moods of Australia’s tropical climates, giving the viewer a real sense of nature’s power in northern Australia.

The economical simplicity and subtly of Max Bowden’s paintings belie many years of sitting in nature and trying to distil its essence. The landscapes of Max Bowden’s are ‘person-less’ portraits. She uses motifs such as piers, houses, weather and cars to hint at the funny ways in which we live, struggle and strive.
