ABOUT MITCHELL FINE ART
The Brisbane gallery space was officially opened in August 2015. Formerly known as Muk Muk Fine Art, one of Australia’s established names in Indigenous art, the business operated galleries in the Northern Territory.
Demonstrating a wealth of knowledge on Indigenous art and an impressive inventory of artworks, the rebranding to Mitchell Fine Art was undertaken to reflect the company’s expansion into Contemporary art, whilst retaining its ongoing connection and inventory of Aboriginal artworks.
Gallery Director Mike Mitchell has more than 35 years’ experience working in Aboriginal communities across Queensland, and the Northern and Central areas of Northern Australia.
Born in Darwin, where Mike spent his early years before his family moved to Papua New Guinea. After graduating high school Mike became a primary school teacher and worked in the remote Aboriginal QLD communities of Palm Island and Yarrabah. Following a relocation to Katherine in the Northern Territory Mike worked as an Aboriginal Employment, Education and Development Field Officer, managing the delivery of education and employment opportunities for remote Aboriginal communities.
This experience and time spent living in communities has resulted in a deep understanding of Aboriginal people, and a connection to their culture and their art.
In his time with his galleries Mike has worked with some of Australia’s foremost Indigenous artists, both living and now deceased and has curated exhibitions within Australia and around the world. Mike strives to nurture emerging talent and promote art throughout Australia and overseas. His business is founded on strong working relationships with all its clients and he is passionate about the arts.
'The Gallery boasts a stable of some of Australia’s leading Aboriginal and Contemporary artists', says Mike, 'I am fortunate to be in a business that allows me to continue my passions - art and collecting.
