SHOWING AT ORANGE REGIONAL GALLERY

Official Opening - Friday 15 September, 6pm
Curators Talk - Saturday 16 September, 11am.

Barney Ellaga (c.1940 – 2015) was the ‘Tjungayi’ or cultural leader for the Alawa people of Central Arnhem Land. His position was to ensure cultural maintenance and adherence to cultural law associated with ceremony and traditional practices.

In addition to being a senior law man and custodian, Barney Ellaga was also a prominent artist and documenter of cultural information for his people.

The Last Songman, curated by Gallery Director Mike Mitchell, presents Ellaga’s striking use of vibrant colours and intricate designs to chronicle the sacred stories, traditions, and spiritual beliefs of the Alawa people of the Northern Territory.

Radiant colours and abstract compositions narrate the stories of his ancestors, reflect the landscape of his homeland, and convey traditional socio-political messages.

As Barney Ellaga’s sons predeceased him and there was no one to pass the majority of his knowledge onto, a tradition dating back through the millennia died with him.

He was the last songman.
