EXHIBITION | Franck Gohier 'Australia Has Cowboys Too'

EXHIBITION | Franck Gohier 'Australia Has Cowboys Too'

Darwin artist Franck Gohier returns to Mitchell Fine Art with his fifth solo exhibition, 'Australia Has Cowboys Too’, a new body of work inspired by the iconography of Western comics, films, and vintage advertising.

Reimagining the visual language of the American frontier within an Australian context, Gohier explores themes of national identity, masculinity, colonial legacy, and the divide between remote and urban Australia.

Known for his bold graphic compositions and satirical edge, the works invite audiences in only to reveal deeper questions beneath the surface.

"I do not place too much emphasis on explaining my paintings to an audience. Some are obvious, some are ambiguous, and others yet are totally absurdist. I do however invite the viewer to explore the visuals, to read the titles, to allow themselves to imagine what they may interpret the painting to be from their own subjectivity".

With 'Australia Has Cowboys Too', Gohier offers a distinctly Australian take on the enduring cowboy myth, further cementing his reputation as one of the country’s most significant contemporary artists.

A practicing artist since 1987, Franck Gohier's artworks have been acquired by Artbank, the Australian National Gallery Canberra, Gold Coast Art Gallery, Griffith University, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney.

The exhibition is showing from 16 June – 11 July 2026.

An Artist Talk and Exhibition Opening will be held on Saturday 20th June, 3 - 5pm with Franck Gohier in attendance.

All events are free, RSVPs not required.
