Congratulations to Matthew Cheyne on his selection as a finalist in the 2024 Sunshine Coast National Art Prize at the Caloundra Regional Gallery.
Matthew Cheyne is a Queensland artist, working in oil painting, drawing and sculpture. He graduated from the Queensland College of Art in 2001, having also studied film, and literature.
Matthew Cheyne's work is part oil painting, part hyper-colour drawing. His painting is full of that urgency, fuelled by the artist’s need for reinvention. His subjects inhabit deliciously tonal, abstracted backgrounds, inviting the viewer to flesh out the scene.
The Sunshine Coast National Art Prize is a dynamic visual arts award reflecting outstanding contemporary 2D and new media arts practice in Australia. Now in its eighteenth year, the exhibition presents the remarkable finalist works by artists from across the country.
The forty artworks selected as finalists will be exhibited at the Caloundra Regional Gallery from 24 August until 13 October 2024.
Winners will be announced on 3 October 2024.
