'Hawkesbury River, Saints not Sinners' is a response to our impact on our environment, in the form of a symbolic 'portrait' of my immediate surrounds. But who is the saint? And who is the sinner? And what is the driving force behind these titles. My painting illustrates an impact from the past (the old orange orchards), the present (Pacific oyster farming) and the unintentional (spreading of carp in our waterways).
When an introduced species thrives, should this be considered a natural progression in our ever evolving world? Or should humans take responsibility for how we alter our surrounds? Can we embrace the impact? Turn sinners into saints? Apparently, carp can be quite delicious... when prepared correctly.
