Congratulations to Ann Thomson, Min-Woo Bang, Mirra Whale and Steve Lopes who are finalists in the Redland Art Awards.
The Redland Art Awards is a biennial contemporary art prize open to all Australian artists, presented by Redland Art Gallery.
Congratulations to all finalists who were chosen from a competitive pool of over 400 entries from all over Australia. The awards have both acquisitive and non-acquisitive cash prizes.
Ann Thomson is a Brisbane born, Sydney based painter and sculptor known for her vibrant, expressive artworks. Described by the late Edmund Capon as “one of the most interesting and intuitive artists in Australia today”, Ann's works are not intended to replicate a scene or a landscape, but rather evoke a sense of place.
Born in Seoul, Australian landscape painter Min-Woo Bang cloudscape paintings are both ethereal and mesmerising. Struck with the charm of the Australian landscape and the absolute enormity of our skies Min-Woo Bang’s primary subject matter is the allure of our natural surroundings and the ephemeral beauty of our skies.
Mirra Whale is a Sydney based artist whose artworks explore the formal and conceptual limits of the genre of still life. Mirra’s artworks explore every day, 'banal and commonplace' subjects and presents them from another angle. Mirra’s works tread the lines between the physical and the ideal, and between the timelessness of the painted image and the time-bound structure of stories.
Steve Lopes is a Sydney based painter and printmaker known for his figurative landscape. He often works en plein air, painting vignettes of a place which are used as references for large-scale studio works. While his landscapes are often a representation of what he saw, the figures are often imagined personalities or placed into the composition after the fact. He often depicts isolated figures to emphasise the displacement of the human figure within the world.
The exhibition for the winners and finalists will be held from the 8th of December 2024 to the 28th of January 2025.
