Janet Golder Kngwarreye was born in 1973 in Boundary Bore in the Utopia region, approx 270kms north east of Alice Springs, Central Australia. Janet grew up in Alice Springs but moved to Utopia when she was a teenager.
Janet’s mother Margaret Golder Kngwarreye and father Sammy Petyarre are also established artists. She is the granddaughter of Utopian artist Polly Ngale and the great granddaughter of world renowned indigenous artists Emily Kame Kngwarreye.
She is married to Ronnie Bird Jungala, whose mother was artist Ada Bird Petyarre.
Growing up during the time of the Utopian batik project Janet would sit and watch her family paint and learn the stories and dreamings of her tribe. Janet paints several different dreaming stories including body painting, bush leaves and yam dreaming.
