'Inferno' | Sophie Cape

Mitchell Fine Art is delighted to present Sophie Cape’s first solo exhibition, exploring the elemental power of fire and the transformative relationship between the Australian landscape and the creative process.

Travelling to landscapes marked by fire, Cape gathers charcoal and the remnants of burnt materials, repurposing these natural resources to create imagery that emerges directly from the land.

Through this process, destruction becomes a means of creation, as the physical traces of fire are transformed into expressive works that capture the energy, movement and enduring presence of the landscape.

Sophie Cape has won several  major Australian art prizes including the Hadley's Art Prize in Tasmania and the Portia Geach Memorial Award and Paddington Art Prize in Sydney.
