Mitchell Fine Art is delighted to announce its participation the Sydney Contemporary at Carriageworks from 11 - 14th September showcasing the works of Mirra Whale and Steve Lopes.

Sydney Contemporary is Australasia’s premier art fair – the largest and most diverse gathering of leading contemporary art galleries from Australia, New Zealand, Asia and around the world.

Mirra Whale is a Sydney-based artist whose work explores the formal and conceptual
limits of the genre of still life, utlising everyday household objects and presents them from another angle.

Whale is a five-time finalist in the Archibald Prize and has also been selected in the Mosman Art Prize, Salon Des Refuses, Portia Geach Portrait Prize, Hornsby Art Prize, and the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. In 2024, Mirra Whale was the winner of the Redland Art Prize in Queensland.

Steve Lopes is a Sydney based painter and printmaker known for his figurative landscape. He often works en plein air, painting vignettes which are used as references for large-scale studio works.

While his landscapes are often a representation of what he saw, the figures are often imagined or placed in after the fact. He often depicts isolated figures to emphasize the displacement of the human figure within the world.

Steve Lopes' works have been acquired in collections such as the National Art Gallery of Australia, Parliament House Art Collection, Canberra, BHP Billiton Art Collection and the Time Warner Collection in New York.
