Congratulations to Kim Wilson, Matthew Cheyne and Mirra Whale on their selection as finalists in the 2026 Stanthorpe Art Prize in QLD.
Kim Wilson is a Brisbane artist working primarily with painting, her artworks moving between realism and slight surrealism. Kim's artistic practice examines the world around us and analyses our relationship with the natural environment.
Matthew Cheyne is a Queensland artist, working in oil painting, drawing and sculpture. Subjects as diverse as volcanoes, street hawkers and looters are rendered with the same dark humour. In Australia, his work has been shown at Casula Powerhouse in Sydney and at the Australian National Archives in Canberra, as well as with numerous commercial and public galleries.
Mirra Whale is a Sydney based artist whose artworks explore the formal and conceptual limits of the genre of still life. Whale is a five-time finalist in the Archibald Prize and has also been selected in the Mosman Art Prize, Salon Des Refuses, Portia Geach Portrait Prize, Hornsby Art Prize, and the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. In 2024 Mirra Whale was the winner of the Redland Art Prize in Queensland.
Since 1972, the biennial Stanthorpe Art Prize has been a beacon for artistic talent, attracting entries from across Australia. The $50,000 total prize pool makes the Stanthorpe Art Prize 2026 one of the richest in Australia.
The winners are announced on Friday 12 June at Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery, QLD.
The exhibition will show from 12 June – 23 August 2026.
