The Goanna Dreaming stories track the journeys of ancestral Goannas as they traveled across the landscape during the Dreamtime (Creation period). 

The ridges, waterholes, and rock formations around the Wadeye region are understood to be the physical marks, burrows, or forms left behind by these ancestors.

For the clans who inherit this Dreaming, the Goanna serves as a direct totem and spiritual guardian. The stories pass down vital, practical laws regarding hunting cycles, environmental conservation, and social kinship rules.
