Christine Christophersen’s painting Waramutamunji (the Creator) draws on an important creation story from her clan in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.
The central figure, Waramutamunji is a powerful ancestral creator woman in Arnhem Land cosmology.
Waramutamunji is an ancestral being who travelled across the land shaping country, creating people, establishing kinship systems, and giving law and social structure to humanity.
Christophersen described this as “our version of god … ours is a woman, it’s an epic story.”
Her artwork explores how Waramutamunji established the balance between men and women, moieties, kinship obligations, and identity. In her kinship series, circles and triangles often represent men and women, while colours refer to different clan and skin relationships.
For her, the creator story was not only ancient history — it was a living framework for protecting culture, country, and future generations.
She said she began exploring Waramutamunji’s ‘ongoing legacy’ because she worried about what knowledge would survive for her grandchildren. She explained that oral transmission alone was becoming harder, so her paintings became a new way to carry and preserve cultural knowledge.
