Kudditji Kngwarreye was a senior lawman and cultural custodian of the Anmatyerre people and was one of the most profoundly original voices in contemporary Australian art.

Born circa 1928 Kudditji grew up immersed in the ancient rhythms of traditional bush life. His knowledge of country, ceremony, and law came from lived experience and oral transmission, passed down through generations.

This painting shows Kudditji’s depiction of his country of Utopia. The broad strokes and combination of bold colours and soft fusions, accentuate the natural colours of his homelands and the sky over the changing seasons.

This is his grandfather’s story and shows a secret place that is for men only.
