Makinti Napanangka's paintings incorporate designs associated with the story of the ‘Kungka Kutjarra’ (two women), ancestral beings from mythological times that traversed the landscape during the times of creation.

Makinti’s inspiration for the patterns of her works come from the hairstring skirts known as Nyimparra which both the Pintupi men and women wear in ceremonial dance. These skirts are woven from human hair. While the linear patterns in Makinti’s paintings refer to the skirts worn by the women, the flowing rhythms of the lines relate to the songs and dances of the Pintupi’s women’s ceremonies.
