'The heads are part of my Hecklers series which covers the wallpaper works and a series of sculptures. The idea with these works was to create what are, essentially, anti-emojis.
That is to say that where an emoji aims to communicate a specific emotion in an obvious way, my heads are intended to resist interpretation.
I'm interested in the inscrutability of faces in a crowd, people you pass in the street, on the bus. These are all people with complex inner lives and stories that I have no access to. It's perhaps like the intrigue of a closed door.
To try and evoke that idea, I have pushed the actual elements of the face to the edge of abstraction and made the heads black to try to arrive at a point where I feel they just talk about presence and don't veer into characters.'
