In this painting Michael has depicted the ‘Yam Dreaming’ or Yala story with the lines
radiating from the centre of the circle portraying the yam and its web-like root system as it grows through the ground.
The yam is an important native bush food source for the Warlpiri people and holds high importance.
It generally grows after periods or rain. It is believed that the Yala ancestors travelled underground through huge areas of the Central Desert
Michael is the custodian of numerous traditional stories which have been passed down to him mainly from his father’s side.
