This painting shows Minnie Pwerle’s depiction of ‘Awelye’ or Body Painting story and showcases designs which are applied to the women’s upper body for ceremonial purposes.
The Anmatyerre women would apply iconography to their upper body using their fingertips and small, sharpened twigs for cermonial purposes. Paint was created using coloured ochres mixed with animal fats
The ceremonies are very important for the Anmatyerre women. Through body painting, song and dance they tell the stories of long traditions and customs.
