Mitjili Napurrula is a Pintupi woman from the Haasts Bluff region, located 200 km west of Alice Springs in Central Australia.

She was half-sister to renowned artist Turkey Tjupurrula Tolson (dec) and was also a custodian of the Kulata (Spear) Tjukurrpa/dreaming story.

This painting is Mitjili Napurrula’s depiction of the traditional story ‘Watiya Juta’.

This painting shows the iconography of the desert oakwood trees, red sandhills and rocks of her father’s country to the west of her community of Haasts Bluff.

The iconography that Mitjili uses represents the women's side of the Tjukurrpa story, which belonged to her father. This story was passed down to her by her mother.

It shows the trees that provide the wood used for the making of spears (kulata) and other objects.
