This painting shows Ningura’s depiction of “Wirrulnga”, a rockhole site in a small rocky outcrop, east of the Kiwirrkurra community in the desert of Western Australia.

Wirrulnga is a site which is associated with birth. It is here that the women of the Napaltjarri and Naparrula groups go to give birth. Men are not allowed at this site.

While at Wirrulnga the women also make spun hair-string with which to make ‘Nyimparra’ (hair string skirts). These are worn during ceremonies. The small circles are ‘Kampurarrpa’ or desert raisin. These berries can be eaten straight from the bush but are sometimes ground into a paste and cooled in the coals to form a type of damper.
