Walala Tjapaltjarri is part a small family group that made international headlines when they walked out of the remote Western Australian desert in late 1984.

Until that moment, Walala and his family had lived a completely traditional lifestyle, entirely isolated from modern Western society.

In his paintings he tells stories of the Tingari Ancestors - men and women - who travelled great distances across the land laying down a body of ceremonies and other law, and creating sacred sites as they went.

His paintings are literal and spiritual maps of the waterholes that kept his family alive for generations and also tell of the Tingari law for the Pintupi people.
