In 1984 Walala Tjapaltjarri was amongst a small group of Pintupi who walked out of the desert and into the tiny community of Kiwirrkurra and had contact with western civilisation for the first time. The group became known as the ‘Pintupi Nine’

The news attracted international attention as they were among the last Aboriginal people known to have been living a completely traditional desert life.

Walala depicts designs associated with the Tingari ancestors, who were a group Pintupi people responsible for the creation of country, traversing large stretches of the desert and creating natural features, laws, stories and songs for the benefit of human survival.
