Collection: 'Luxury' | Kim Wilson

18 November - 19 December 2025

OPENING EVENT: Friday 21 November, 6-8pm
ARTIST TALK: Saturday 29 November, 11am

Brisbane-based artist Kim Wilson returns to Mitchell Fine Art with her second solo exhibition, ‘Luxury’, a series that celebrate the beauty of nature while reflecting on its fragility and the looming threat of ecological decline.

Through realism and surrealism, she calls attention to our fraught relationship with the natural world, reminding us of the responsibility we bear to protect the only planet we have.

Wilson depicts nature through richly detailed and intimate glimpses rather than sweeping panoramas. It is the quiet mess of details that are often overlooked in favour of the grand display.

In Wilson’s paintings, the boundary between what is ‘known nature’ and what is ‘felt nature’ blurs. They hint at not only what nature looks like, but the tension between human beauty and human destructiveness. They heighten awareness by unsettling the familiar, hinting at the fragility of what we see, and providing an emotional intensity that strict realism might lack.

She takes much of her inspiration from her extensive travels to some of the remotest corners of the world, including Northern Russia, sub–Antarctic Islands, Africa, USA, Canada and small island nations in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Kim Wilson’s art is an invitation to look closely, to appreciate nature’s beauty both large and small, and to feel responsibility to act on the damage we’ve done.

She reminds us that caring for our planet is not optional, it is intrinsic to our survival.
