Collection: 'Unbound' | Odessa Mahony-de Vries

5 May - 16 May 2026

OPENING EVENT: Friday 8 May, 6-8pm

Mitchell Fine Art presents Sunshine Coast–based artist Odessa Mahony-de Vries in her solo exhibition ‘Unbound’.

This body of work features a series of energetic, large-scale abstract oil paintings shaped by a process-driven approach, where colour moves freely across the surface, unrestrained and resistant to rigid structures.

Rather than beginning with a pre-determined endpoint, Mahony-de Vries enters the work through gesture, an initial mark, a wash of colour, or a textured stroke. Her practice is rooted in responsiveness, where every new element is both an echo of what came before and an invitation to what might emerge next.

Her compositions grow through a series of intuition. Her surfaces often carry the visible history of their mark making. Layers accumulate, shift, and sometimes dissolve, revealing traces of earlier decisions.

‘Unbound explores embodied mark making, where I release energy into the work and let go of control over the material letting it surprise me’ Odessa Mahony-de Vries, 2026

Ultimately, Mahony-de Vries’s art is less about depicting a subject than about charting the unfolding of thought through gesture. Each piece becomes a record of attention, how she notices, reacts, adjusts, and discovers.

Her work invites viewers to witness not just the final image but the evolving process that brought it into being.
