Dylan Sarra - People's Choice Award at CIAF2025

Congratulations to Dylan Sarra on winning the People’s Choice Award at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair for his work ‘Native Police Spears’.

The Native Police Spears reference the Queensland Native Police, a force established to carry out the violent expansion of colonial settlement.

Tipped with hand knapped glass, they draw from historical accounts of material improvisation by both Aboriginal troopers.

Dylan Sarra is a Taribelang/Gooreng Gooreng artist from the Bundaberg region and currently lives in Brisbane (Meanjin).

Sarra's artistic journey is deeply entwined with the transformative power of Indigenous art and how it contributes to written language.

With a focus on exploring identity and place, Dylan Sarra uses a range of disciplines such as print, digital works and sculpture to gently persuade an audience into humanising the Indigenous experience.

Now in its 16th year of celebrating the vibrant arts and cultural heritage of Queensland's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair showcased an exciting First Nations program of events at the Tank Arts Centre.
