Collection: 'Incantation' | Idris Murphy

Sydney-based artist Idris Murphy is a landscape painter known for his intimate understanding of the Australian landscape. 

Murphy’s paintings explore a deep connection to the Australian landscape in aim of capturing the spirit of a place, rather than likeness. His en plein air practice provides him that intrinsic connection to the environment that surrounds him, with his ‘expeditions’ through the Australian bush ‘offering him enough to last a lifetime’.

Idris Murphy graduated from the National Art School in 1971, and he received a travel scholarship provided by Dame Elizabeth Murdoch, judged by Fred Williams.

In the early 1980’s Murphy was a lecturer at the University of Wollongong in NSW and was instrumental in establishing the printmaking department of the newly founded School of Creative Arts.

His work is held in the public collections of the National Gallery of Australia, National Library of Australia, Federal Parliament House Art Collection and the Art Gallery of NSW, State Library of New South Wales, and the State Library of Queensland.
