In this painting David Hayes explores the resilience of the human spirit in response to trauma.
The painting drawing heavily on an object as a metaphor and depicts the scapula, or shoulder blade bone, as in a state of flight.
This bone allows motion of the upper limb sufficient for flight in birds and in mythology is referred to as โangel wingsโ When broken it represents severe force and trauma.
Putting back the pieces and learning to fly again is a painful and beautiful journey.
