Makinti Napanangka's work incorporates designs associated with the story of the ‘Kungka Kutjarra’ (two women), ancestral beings from mythological times that traversed the landscape during the times of creation. They covered vast distances in Australia's central desert regions creating geographical features, fauna and flora.

Makinti’s inspiration for the patterns of her works come from the hairstring skirts known as nyimparra which both the Pintupi men and women wear in ceremonial dance. These skirts are woven from human hair and date back to those worn by the ‘Kungka Kutjarra’.

While the linear patterns in Makinti’s paintings refer to the skirts worn by the women, the flowing rhythms of the lines relate to the songs and dances of the Pintupi’s women’s ceremonies.
This painting depicts compositions linked to a site sacred to Pintupi women known as lupul. it is the dreaming site of a small bird native to Australia known colloquially as the peewee.
