These spears reference the Queensland Native Police, a force established to carry out the violent expansion of colonial settlement.

Tipped with hand knapped glass, they draw from historical accounts of material improvisation by Aboriginal troopers.

The scarlet stripes, military buttons and Austrian crosses decorating the shafts mirror the uniforms worn by the troopers, who were often First Nations men recruited to police their own people.

The use of ultramarine blue and white ties them visually to state power and imposed authority. Unlike the cultural spears opposite them, these are instruments of control and internal conflict.

They speak to the complexity and pain of forced roles in a divided system. Their presence confronts the viewer with uncomfortable truths about complicity, coercion and the machinery of occupation.
